A breakfast burrito! I think we have too many great Mexican spots to pick one!
Can you share a little about what you do and what drives your work?
I host The Pulse, a weekly, national health and science show produced by WHYY. Beyond my subject area, which I love, I'm passionate about telling people's stories and learning what makes them tick. What have they learned in different situations? When did they thrive, when did they fail, and how did they recover?
What’s one thing about your background or journey that might surprise people?
I used to own and run a giant band rehearsal space called Surreal Sound Studios in Port Richmond, and I booked and promoted Indie Rock shows and dance parties at a venue across from Johnny Brenda's at the dawn of Fishtown.
What in Philly inspires you right now, and why?
Right now, the people who are kicking into gear to save the Academy of Natural Sciences - one of my favorite places in the city. Dioramas are weird and wonderful - and that polar bear is a marvel. It's the true Philly spirit to come to the defense of our beloved institutions! #SaveHaddy!!
If you could invite anyone (living or dead) to an SBC event, who would it be and why?
I think we would have quite the fun evening talking to Ben Franklin. I'm a fan. I know that's not the most original answer, but I'm continuously amazed by his ingenuity and absolute thirst for knowledge. And - I'd love to talk to Pat Croce. What a crazy journey he's been on, and oh, the pirate jokes we could make...
What’s one book, podcast, show, or other piece of content you’re enjoying right now?
I've gotten back into Heavyweight - a podcast that ponders regret and revisits events and people that have lingered in our thoughts. Check out an episode called "The Messenger" (which features Pat Croce in a very unexpected role).
Deep curiosity and a love for the Philly spirit are just a few of the things that Maiken brings to the Club! She joined the club last year, and since then we have all felt her presence as she brings a new perspective to conversations and exciting energy to the stage. We are thrilled to have her not only as a member but as our 2026-27 Moderator and Programming Lead.
