Breakfast with Anthony Robinson

Anthony Robinson Headshot

Today we’re having breakfast with SBC Board Member and Founder of The Devoted, Anthony Robinson.

We don't meet for breakfast anymore, but if we did, what would you want on the table?

Scrapple. I love it, and I don't trust people who don't. I'd want this from Sabrina's.

Can you share a little about what you do and what drives your work?

The Devoted is a brand agency focused on helping people and organizations tell their story a little better. After working in the industry for over 15 years, I realized a lot of my clients enjoyed working with Black-led companies. I wanted to form a Black-owned agency that was competitive in the Philadelphia area and gave a different option for those seeking something a little different.

Working for nonprofits, higher education, and small businesses has helped me realize how interconnected we are. Especially in Philadelphia. The people doing the real work...actually helping people and providing a sense of community is incredible. Every one of my clients has a fascinating journey, and I get to not only learn about them but also support them.

What’s one thing about your background or journey that might surprise people?

I performed stand-up comedy and operated a comedy club for 12 years when I lived in Virginia. I haven't performed in a while, but if you look closely at The Devoted, the entire brand is built on humor. I like bringing that element to the table.

What in Philly inspires you right now, and why?

What the Committee of Seventy is doing right now is absolutely important. Election work is critical to our democracy and society. If they didn't exist, who would do the work?

If you could invite anyone (living or dead) to an SBC event, who would it be and why?

More obvious response - Michelle Obama. Her approach to what makes us a functional society, but from the viewpoint of someone who isn't a politician by trade, is amazing.

What’s one book, podcast, show, or other piece of content you’re enjoying right now?

The Pitt. It's just....so good. Especially the mental health aspects. It really makes you appreciate people in the medical profession. Or at least...it SHOULD.

Comedy, scrapple, politics, and mental health. If you’ve met Anthony, you’ve likely picked up on his caring nature and his background in comedy! If you haven’t met him, we encourage you to ask him for a joke when you do. In all seriousness, we are lucky to have him as part of the Club and our board. Thanks for having breakfast with us, Anthony!
