Program Description

Michael Nutter took office as mayor of Philadelphia in January 2008, just as the nation was heading into the financial crisis and the Great Recession. The city faced a disastrous budget gap, forcing Nutter to make painful spending cuts, raise taxes and navigate difficult negotiations with city unions.

But there were major moments that lifted the city's spirits: the Phillies won the World Series in 2008, ending a 25-year championship drought, and Pope Francis drew hundreds of thousands to Philadelphia for the World Meeting of Families in 2015.

Throughout his eight years in office, Nutter wrestled with some of Philadelphia's most persistent challenges — poverty, violent crime, inadequate school funding, gentrification and an underfunded pension system. We'll talk about the highs and lows of his tenure, and what he would do differently if he could do it all over again. Also… would he actually do it all over again?
